Islamabad - The 20th
Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the
Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC) was held at The Hague from 30 November to
04 December 2015, the Foreign Office reported on Saturday.
In gratitude
of Pakistan‘s contribution towards achieving the objectives and purposes of the
CWC, the Conference consistently re-elected Pakistan for the term 2016-2018 as
a member of the Executive Council of the Organization for Prohibition of
Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which is a treaty body for the CWC.
Ambassador
Moazzam Ahmad Khan, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to OPCW, while
addressing the Conference, expressed Pakistan‘s untiring commitment to the
objectives and purposes of the Convention. He repeated Pakistan‘s firm resolve
to continue to work with the international community for ensuring a world
completely free of chemical weapons.
This year experts from Pakistan
also got elected as members of the Scientific Advisory Board and Advisory Board
on Administrative and Financial Matters. In addition, Pakistan was also chosen
as the new facilitator for the implementation of Article XI of the CWC which
deals with international cooperation.
"Being one of the first
countries to accede to the Convention, Pakistan has always played an active
role in the OPCW. Presently, Pakistan also serves as the Coordinator of the
Asia Group in the OPCW Executive Council," the FO said in a
statement.
